Writing-Ways to stay creative and keep your writing skills sharp.

  • Write a different ending to a story you love
  • Create a poem to go with your story
  • Write a song that tells the story
  • Design a cartoon strip about the story
  • Create a new book jacket for the book
  • Write a script as if it were to become a movie!
  • Start a journal and write about the different adventures and activities that you do  throughout the summer
  • Create a PowerPoint about a trip you took
  • Write a postcard describing different places you visit in and out of your neighborhood
  • Write your own narrative story about your summer

Summer Activities that involve Math


  • Measure the distance you travel on a trip, hike, walk, or activity.  See how many miles, feet, or inches you travel. (challenge: see how many kilometers, meters, or centimeters!)
  • Have a competition with your parents to see how fast you can do multiplication /division flash cards.  (Winner gets to have an award)
  • Cook your favorite recipes or create one.
  • Keep track of the weather and temperature.

Things to do in your area-getting out and about

  • Visit your local library to see what reading program they have for the summer.
  • Read the newspaper and look for free and new things to see in our community.
  • Go on a hike in one of the many hiking trails around Orange County.
  • Visit the zoo or aquarium and learn about new animals.

What really happened at the First Thanksgiving? Become a history detective and find out!

In this fun, award-winning activity, you take on the role of a “history detective” to investigate what really happened at the famous 1621 celebration. (Hint: It was a lot more than just a feast!) Along the way, you will read a letter written by an eyewitness to the event, learn about Wampanoag traditions of giving thanks, and visit Pilgrim Mary Allerton’s home. As a final activity, you can design and print your own Thanksgiving exhibit panel.
